Wandering through the labyrinthic streets in the medina of Marrakech

In last few years wandering through the labyrinthic streets in the medina of Marrakech I met few makers whose work I deeply admire. Every single piece they make is unique and handmade with patience and intention, every single imperfection in their pieces is due to be celebrated.

Moroccan pompom blankets have always catched my eyes. While I was enjoying of the touch of a beautiful blanket  hanged on a door a man with a gente smile appeared behind that door.

When I met this man I didn’t undernstand how those moroccan blankets were made but he lovingly took me into his atelier to show me how he created them. The atelier was located in one of the most ancient buildings in the medina. I walked with him  through a couple of doors and climbed a narrow spiral stairs and there I could admire blankets, pillows, rugs and bales of wool and cotton. Everything was different from what I have seen before: the shape, the cut, the finish captured my attention. All the pieces were different from one another. There was no sign of mass production. Every ítem was unique and guaranteed to be the highest quality posible. Soon we were joined by a boy whose kindness to show me the details was stricking. He invited me to a sweet and steamy mint tea while he explained me how the wool was sourced, how the colors were chosen and the uses of every piece. After the second tea the conversations turned about whises, family and dreams.

That day I left the atelier with a feeling of happiness, a wish of wanting to go back to discover more, to listen their stories and spend some time sharing a pot of mint tea. This atelier was definitely an inviting place to learn, create and share a pleasant time. As I got to know more about was going on in that ancient place, I learned that they design every blanket and pillow carefully but also they can create special collections following the client’s special requriments thanks to their expertise.

Today our pompom blankets and pillows are handwoven on traditional wooden looms in this ancient atelier with the finest quality wool by soulful artisans in wooden looms following the ancient tradition.

Me invitó a pasar.
