THE STORY BEHIND 

Berber rugs cover the floor and adorn the walls of the ancient atelier. Beni Ouarain, Azilal, vintage moroccan wedding blankets and Beni Mguild wait patiently for their story to be told. Mohamed is making tea following the ritual and Mustapha tells me stories from the desert, of nomadic lives and berber tribes. 

And there on seated on berber rugs, barefoot and with a steaming cup of sweet mint tea on my hands was how it all started. A new life that opened its doors without hardly realizing it.

Many years later, I feel very grateful for having been nurtured by an ancient and nomadic culture from their roots, on the ground, traveling from North to South of Morocco on the hunt of the most beautiful pieces, sharing tea with designers in the medina of Marrakech and afternoons learning traditional weaving techniques with berber families.

THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BERBER WOMEN 

Berber rugs are true treasures that embellish over time but also an open book full of symbology, a hidden language knotted in wool that only Berber women know how to interpret.

An open door to the past, inherited from generation to generation, from grandmothers, mothers and daughters. They always tell me that when they begin to weave a rug they feel like in front of a blank canvas and ready to tell their story, to draw their emotions by knotting wool and cotton. Magical rituals, scenes from her nomadic life, symbols of protection and female empowerment shape a secret language that tells the story of each weaver.

It is this combination of magic symbolism and minimalist utility that gives the Berber carpets their unique appeal. Each carpet carries the weaver’s desire to protect the human spirit from negative energy and shield the human body from the elements. Whether we lay them on our floors or hang them on our walls, these story-filled pieces of art become talismans for our everyday lives.

HACE MUCHOS AÑOS...

Las alfombras cubren el suelo y adornan los muros del antiguo atelier. Beni Ouarain, Azilal, handiras vintage y Beni Mguild esperan pacientes a que su historia sea contada. Mohamed está preparado el té siguiendo el ritual y Mustapha me cuenta historias del desierto, de vidas nómadas y de las tribu beréber. 

Y allí sobre alfombras beréber, descalza y con una taza humeante de dulce té a la menta fue como empezó todo. Una nueva vida que abría sus puertas sin apenas darme cuenta. 

Años después, me siento muy agradecida por haberme nutrido de una cultura ancestral desde el origen, viajando de Norte a Sur del país en busca de las piezas más bellas, compartiendo té con diseñadores en la medina de Marrakech hasta tardes aprendiendo las técnicas de tejido tradicionales con familias beréber. 

EL LENGUAJE SECRETO DE LOS SÍMBOLOS

Las alfombras beréber son tesoros que embellecen con el paso del tiempo pero también un libro abierto plagado de simbología, un lenguaje oculto anudado en lana que solo las mujeres beréber saben interpretar. 

Una puerta al pasado, heredado de generación en generación, de abuelas, madres e hijas. Ellas siempre me cuentan que cuando comienzan una alfombra lo sienten como un lienzo en blanco en el que contar su historia, en el que dibujar sus emociones anudando lana y algodón. Rituales mágicos, escenas de su vida nómada, símbolos de protección y empoderamiento femenino dan forma a un lenguaje secreto que cuenta la historia de cada tejedora. 

Cada pieza beréber lleva consigo el deseo de proteger de los elementos y atraer buena energía al hogar donde permanezca. Bien extendidas en el suelo o colgadas de la pared como un tapiz, estas piezas llenas de simbolismo y arte se han convertido en talismanes para cada hogar.
